Guy Kawasaki's new site Alltop.com is a categorized list of the top sites on the web, mostly blogs. The A-list is not dead apparently, nor will it ever be.
I'm torn between derision and admiration. I want so badly to sneer at the idea of an A-list, but am concerned you would consider it sour grapes. At the same time, I have to express respect for those who are on it, because I believe the cream does rise to the top. It's my devilish self on one shoulder and my better angels on the other I suppose.
I guess the question that should be asked regards what value the A-list provides. Is it that they are meme starters, or that they get the "scoop" on stories before the rest of us? Is it that their posts are more insightful or provide greater value to the conversation? Or, is it that they've stuck it out over the long-haul and are getting points for staying power? Or... (What do yo think? Is the answer as obvious as the nose on my face?!)
A question I want to ask of Kawasaki is who decides who makes the list? Or, better stated, upon what criteria is inclusion in the list based?
Ultimately, everyone has their own version of the A-list and that's as it should be. Yet, I'd be surprised if most of us didn't include at least some of the Allstartop entries in ours.
