I was going through an archive of posts at Allbusiness.com which had never seen the light of day, and found this one, which I wrote in 2006. The information still seemed useful, so, with a bit of editing, I'm sharing it with you some four years later.
There are many good reasons to blog. For some people, it's a way to chronicle their lives. For others, it's therapy. For those of us using blogs as a business marketing communications tool, it may be a means by which we inform customers of "happenings" with our company, or as a way to promote our products and services, or to demonstrate our expertise.
The point here is, whatever your purpose may be, it's best to have one. (Notice what I said...it's best to have "one.") Blogs are very niche-specific. It's a mistake to try and make your's the "be-all, end-all" of everything you could possibly ever want to talk about.
So, let me ask, "Does your blog have a specific purpose?" If the answer is no, here are a few suggestions you may find helpful:
Company updates. I already alluded to that one. Your blog is your company's "news" page.
Breaking news. Some bloggers are journalists at heart. Scooping a story is is their life blood.
Link blog. Some bloggers set up a blog just for the purpose of listing links to others. That was how blogging got started in fact.
Entertainment. Some companies create "character" blogs. (Okay, admittedly that's a bit of a throw back to bygone days. But, I kept it in for nostalgia sake. Then again, there are other ways a company can use its blog to entertain.)
CEO blog. Not that you could get your CEO to blog, or that you would want to, but if you did it might be a good thing. He/she can share perspectives unlike any other person in the company.
How-to blog. People love how-tos…you know, lists of 10 ways to do this or that, tutorials walking them through steps, etc.
Multi-media blog. Maybe you don't like to write, but you do like to talk to others via your webcam or are predisposed to using audio podcasts, or you like sharing photos. Who said a blog has to be in the form of the written word.
Op-ed blog. Sometimes it feels good just to give your opinion about something.
The main point here is to give your blog a purpose, regardless of what that is. And, as it regards one that is, to quote Curly, "That's what you've got to figure out."
I find blogging as journal of my life, where I can share/express my thoughts and idea about anything, it's a therapy for me too when I'm bored and nothing to do. Blog is my friend.
